Diagnostic Lab Chain Solves Interoperability with FHIR-First Architecture

Healthcare

The Challenge

A large diagnostic lab chain was struggling to integrate with dozens of different EHR systems used by their hospital partners. Every new integration was a manual, custom-coded project that took weeks and was prone to errors. They needed a scalable, standardized way to exchange results and orders.

What We Didn't Do

We didn't suggest a proprietary integration engine that would charge them per-transaction fees. We didn't tell them they had to force all their partners to change their existing systems.

The SenseSys Approach

We built a vendor-neutral FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) API layer that sat in front of their legacy systems. We mapped their internal data models to the FHIR standard, enabling any FHIR-compliant EHR to connect instantly. For partners still on older standards, we implemented automated HL7-to-FHIR transformation pipelines. This turned their integration bottleneck into a competitive advantage.

The Results

  • Reduced partner onboarding time from 4 weeks to 3 days
  • Eliminated 95% of manual data entry errors for orders
  • Successfully integrated with 12 different EHR platforms
  • Increased order volume by 22% due to easier partner connectivity
Standards like FHIR are the language of modern healthcare. Interoperability is a business strategy, not just a technical requirement.
